I had heard so many great things about TWB that I thought I knew exactly what to expect, but the stories I heard and the experiences I had on TWB cannot compare. No one can explain this experience to anyone, you have to go for yourself to understand just how SICK NASTY T-Dub is!

-Meredith Parks, Gastonia, NC

The day before we left my best friend, who had been on the trip before, asked me if I was having second thoughts (or regrets) about the trip. He said everyone he had talked to on his trip had second thoughts before they left. Oddly enough, I didn't. I was excited all the way up until about an hour before we got to Davidson College. Then I started to get nervous. But as soon as I got there, I was fine. The nerves were gone and I was ready to make new friends. TWB has been an incredible experience. It's brought me closer to the people I already knew and introduced me to amazing people I would have never had the chance to meet otherwise. I've found some of my best friends. I wouldn't trade the TWB experience for anything.
-Katey Bozorth- Madison, NC

The first few days of TWB, I didn't know what to think- I was emotional rollercoaster, but after I started making friends, I loved TWB After seeing the slideshow and hearing about it from the guy that recommended me, I thought I knew what TWB was all about, but I've learned that you can't even come close to explaining TWB to someone- You can't understand how amazing the TWB experienced it yourself I will go home with a new and greater appreciation of things, and especially of America.
-Katie Addington- Jefferson, SC

I thought 85 new friends was impossible, but it is truly awesome how it works out.

Day 23- Return

SUNDAY JULY 8TH, 2007

 TWB DAY 23

TWB 2007 Trek 1 had its final moments together.

Day 23 Blog:
Today we woke up with an unfamiliar feeling, the feeling of uncertainty. We realized that after 5:00 p.m., we will no longer be together as Trek 1. We will always share the memories but we will no longer have the luxury of seeing each other 24 hours a day. This morning we were thirty minutes late leaving our campsite. This was not due to laziness, but instead due to trying to savor every last second we could. Although we were excited to see our families and friends, the thought of returning to Davidson College scared and depressed us. We spent all day on the road, except for a few bathroom and cleaning stops. The counselors refused to let anyone sleep on the bus or vans because it was our last day. They knew that today, more than any other, was the most important to stay awake. We stopped at Centre Church for our last time together. After collecting our lost and found as well as our gifts, we prepared for a moment we were not ready for. Saying goodbye was no where what we thought it was going to be. With many tears, hugs, and "I love yous," we slowly stepped away from our new homes, the Blue Streak, Miss America, and Carolina Panther, to return to our real homes. The only ease to our sadness is the thought that reunions are soon to come. We love our new T-DUB family and know we will stay friends forever.

Note from G-Rant, Kitchin Sink, LDUB, and Wheatboy:
This is by far the most bittersweet day of the trip. It absolutely breaks our hearts to know that we have to leave 84 participants that we have grown to love. Each participant has opened up and taught us so much about life. We were spoiled and now we don't want to return them. We consider ourselves the privileged ones. We get to take the finest high schoolers in America across America. Our goal was to give each participant the greatest trip they could ever imagine. Within this goal, we strived to teach them to lower the walls and be themselves, responsibility, and most importantly how to live for TODAY! What we didn't realize is that they would provide the same in return to us. After leaving Davidson College we drove off in the vans in silence. We couldn't bare the sight of looking in our rear view mirrors and see emptiness rather than fourteen tired and loving participants. As we drove away, individually we reflected on our favorite memories as well as our long lasting friendships. We couldn't look each other in the eyes, for fear of breaking down. This feeling was familiar but never at this degree. We just lost 84 pieces of our heart. When this occurs, you aren't quite sure how to react or how to move forward. Finally, we arrived at Dennis Deaton's house where we cleaned the trailers and vans and went out as staff members to celebrate a safe return over dinner. Falling asleep in a bed last night should have been relaxing and comfortable. There isn't a bed in the world that we wouldn't trade to go back out west to sleep under the stars with our favorite participants. Please remember that you have forever touched us and a day won't go by without our thoughts of T-DUB's 2007 Trip 1. We love you all!

We collected our many gifts and souvenirs, as well as our lost and found, before loading the vehicles for the last time.

Saying goodbye to our TWB family was harder than we expected. We are really going to miss everyone.

Driving into Davidson College brought tears of joy to our eyes. We were sad to realized TWB was coming to an end, yet Seeing family and friends waiting with smiles, balloons and signs eased our sadness.

We couldn't pile off the bus fast enough to receive our family's hugs and kisses.

Another safe and successful TWB experience. Big D, livin' the dream once again! Thank you again and we will always love you!

While holding each other tightly, we sing our favorite song together One last time.

A few of our good lookin' (but not so good smellin') studs from TWB 2007!

Check out your "chrome princess" counselor, Kitch, and your "born free, live free" counselor, Lauren! Wow, they're HOTTIES!!

Take a good look at the men behind the madness, Jackie, Grant, Bob and Dennis. What would we do without them?

Signing off with love from the 5 craziest counselors on earth. We love you and will always be here for you!

The Final "Flippin' Sweet" Armband Competition Update: Although the fellas pulled into Davidson College with possession of the sacred armbands, they soon realized it was in their best interest to return them to their beloved ladies. On their knees, Grant and Bob begged Kitch and Lauren to take them back. I guess we now know who holds all the power in the relationships! Even though we know for real that Bob and Grant are the all mighty!!!

Disclaimer: No males were present in the production of this final armband update. :)

**Second Disclaimer: Bob and Grant added the last sentence.
We then slept cozy with the armbands under our pillows.

Day 22- Kentucky

SATURDAY JULY 7TH, 2007

TWB DAY 22

Hanging out by the Kentucky Derby racetrack. We can't wait to watch a horse race!

Go "My Friend Tuff" (#6), Go!!!

On the second to last day of our Teens Westward Bound experience, we started the day like all the others. We awoke extra early this morning due to our late start yesterday. Slowly but surely, we all managed to pack our things and burn the road on time. We then caught a quick nap before our yummy cereal breakfast. We stopped at a rest area soon after crossing the Illinois state line. After a scenic drive through southern Illinois, we passed into the great state of Kentucky and back into the Eastern Time zone. Our first stop in Kentucky was Churchill Downs. There we had a tour and watched, what was for most of us, our first live horse race. Many of us lost our quarters that we gambled, and a select few won some. After some time in the gift shop, we loaded back onto the bus and vans and had lunch. Venturing farther into Kentucky, our next stop of the day was at the very first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. This was by far the best stop because we had the greatest dinner of the trip! We rolled into the camp site around 8. We had our last contest, which was a Talent Show. Every group did very well but the Sleepy group raised above all the rest to swipe the competition. Winning the overall competition between teams was the Grumpy group. After the Talent Show, the counselors performed several skits and gave a very interesting lost and found fashion show. They also made a few faces red by announcing couples and claimed the TWB Prom King and Queen  Vince Novesel and Haley Conner. After all the fun and games, we joined in a circle and tearfully sang John Denver's--Today. Once we finished, we walked back to our campsite where we had the option to sleep indoors or outdoors. The emotions are rising as the twenty second day of our Teens Westward Bound experience comes to a close. We aren't quite sure if we are prepared to return to life as we knew it more than three weeks ago. All of us will be glad to see our families again, but it will be difficult to leave the family we've acquired while on TWB. The butterflies in our stomach are starting to flutter as we lay down one last time with the people we didn't even know at the beginning of the trip. There will be reunions, countless phone calls, and tons of e-mails but there will most likely never be another time where we will all be together at one time in one place ever again. We will forever cherish the memories made over the duration of our Teens Westward Bound experience and will always love those friends who have entered our lives and changed them for the better. We are all looking forward to seeing our friends and families soon. See you guys tomorrow!!!

Thoughts from some bloggers -

Love,
The Happy Group :)

Last Note from Wheatboy: I cannot believe that tomorrow I will be bringing home 84 of the greatest participants I have ever met to Davidson. The other counselors and I have no idea how we are going to return to normality. I wonder how I am ever going to fall asleep without the loud chatter of participants and bugs in the background. I will soon have to return to cooking my own gluten free meals, rather than being provided multiple bananas for every meal. Today, the realization that we are coming home began hitting home with many of the participants. Although they are very excited to see friends and family, they are equally upset about having to leave their new TDUB family. I too am experiencing this same emotional roller coaster. Luckily, I gambled the rest of my spending money on a horse called My Friend Tuff at Churchill Downs, which turned out to not be a friend at all. Just kidding. The Dopey group took the entire group out to have a dinner at the very first Kentucky Fried Chicken. Immediately after, each group performed their Talent Show routine. I must say that every staff member was imitated perfectly. We had a surprise visit from Freddy last night at our campsite who turned out to be the Park Ranger playing a prank on the participants. He brought a whole new meaning to noise control at the campsite. Finally, everyone went to bed and gazed at the beautiful stars for one last time together. Thank goodness tomorrow will be the last time we have to hear Rise and Shine! Can't wait to see everyone's smiling faces tomorrow. I am going to give you one thing to look forward to: all staff will be wearing something very unique. Hope you can figure out what it is.

Lauren, Crimens, and Ashley posing with their favorite jockey!

The Dopey group treated us to a delicious meal at the original KFC! Look at those bucketheads!

While waiting to eat dinner, each group practiced for tonight's talent show. We can't wait for our last competition.

Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, cole slaw, and homestyle biscuits filled our stomachs full!

The talent show was a huge success. We laughed til we cried! Here are the finalists:

The Dopey Group!

The Happy Group!

The Sneezy Group!

The Bashful Group!

The talent show winner: The Sleepy Group!!!!

The overall competition winner: The Grumpy Group!!! Congrats!

Park Ranger Russell scared us with his impression of Freddy Krueger. Ahhhhhhhhh!!

Day 21- St. Louis

FRIDAY JULY 6TH, 2007

TWB DAY 21

We started our day out by heading to Kansas University.

We celebrated Taylor Moore's birthday today!!! I think she just turned 21!

Today we woke up at 6:00; groggy and soaked in dew. We loaded up the vans and buses a little later than we were supposed to. Actually about twenty minutes later than we were supposed to. We had Pop Tarts and apples for breakfast as we made our way to Kansas University. We walked around the gift shop where the highlight of the day was using the internet to check the blog. We took another group picture at the Kansas University sign. We got back on the bus and traveled to Kansas City, where we had a bubble gum blowing contest in the parking lot between the Chiefs and the Royals stadiums, Nick Gillespie from the Grumpy group won with a 5 inch bubble. After the contest, we trekked across the great state of Missouri where we eventually caught sight of the city of St. Louis and the Gateway to the West. As we got closer and closer to the arch, tensions grew as we braced ourselves for the "Journey to the Top." Groups of five TWBers were squeezed into small, confined capsules. The four minute trip up was very rocky and shaky, but was well worth the slight nauseausness most of us acquired. From the tiny windows, we saw as far east and as far west as probably most of us ever have. After countless pictures, we squeezed back into the capsules and traveled 630 feet back down from the top of the arch. Following some prime shopping at the gift store, we headed to the great lawn in front of the arch where a classic TWB moment takes place - we formed words with our bodies. While we were in position for our first set of words, Kitch received a phone call from Grant saying that the battery in his camera had died. This gave numerous TWBers the chance to catch up on eliminating their farmer's tans. After Bob's race to the top to give Grant the spare battery (well, he really didn't race because he rode the elevator), we could take our pictures. The first phrase we spelled out was "TWB '07." Following that, we formed a popular phrase "Very Nice!", coined by the recent comedy release "Borat." After a few research presentations and pictures, we climbed back into the vehicles and into the great state of Illinois where we set up camp at South Shore State Park in the town of Carlyle. For dinner, the Dopies cooked teriyaki chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn and for dessert they served chocolate chip cookies; pretty sweet, huh? A note to the parents: this site has no pay phones, so parents expecting calls from their kids should not worry - they will have an opportunity to call tomorrow. Tomorrow we travel into the state of Kentucky and into the time zone of which most of us are accustomed. We will visit Churchill Downs and maybe a few other surprise places along the way. Two more days to go you guys!

Love,
The Happy Group

A note from Grant: Another great day in the life of TWB. We are able to gain a little bit more green vegetation in our lives as we are traveling east now. The only problem with this is humidity and bugs are increasing. I am having a hard time telling if the participants have chicken pots or lots of mosquito bites. The archway was very welcoming to us today. Even though it is know as "The Gateway to the West", I feel that it is the TWB gateway back to the east. This makes me feel the anxiety of the last few days. Wow, the T-dub 2007 experience has flown by this year. Bob and I were just talking about how we can't believe that there are only two days left. It has been such an exciting, awesome, fun, amusing, enjoyable, entertaining, comical, thrilling, and life changing year. I know in the back of my mind that these last two days are going to just fly by. I plan to try and take in every moment just to get me by till next summer. I know the future reunions and slideshows are going to be awesome. Well I have to run, dinner is ready! See you on Sunday! Grant

Check us out in our Kansas-wear!!

Sleeping Picture of the Day:

We then stopped between the Kansas Chiefs and Royals stadiums to have bubble gum blowing contest. The Grumpy's won!

We finally made it to the Archway to the West!

This is a few girls in the elevator/ dryer that takes you to the top!

Time to have a little bit of fun with the tourist!
