Day 18-Custer, South Dakota and Mt. Rushmore

MONDAY JULY 2ND, 2007

  TWB DAY 18

Happy 4th of July from Mount Rushmore!

After waking up at 5:30 a.m., we packed our bags and hit the road to travel to Mount Rushmore. In addition to the Miss America van not having a working air conditioner, the trailer had a flat tire. TWB quickly turned into a Nascar Pit Crew to alleviate this problem. Grant provided the trip with the tools and instructions that led us to changing the tire in fourteen flat. Bob's good taste in music was a welcome relief from Kitch's kindergarten music (although we do love it!). The bus was entertained by a dance off between Zeke Staaf, Brian Sherrill and Ryan Childress. We drove through Wyoming and saw wonderful scenery and old western towns. Due to the pre-July Fourth celebrations at Mount Rushmore, we had a hard time getting through the rough traffic and had a difficult time finding a parking spot. We then unloaded to view the infamous Mount Rushmore, ice cream and gift shop. We loaded back up to head to Custer Park where we choreographed our dances for the group competition tomorrow. Grant introduced us to an amazingly challenging game of spinning man. The game proceeds as follows: a camper sits on the spinner and is spun a minimum of fifteen spins; after fifteen spins the camper is helped to his or her feet; and finally the camper attempts to run in a straight line. A majority of the time, the campers attempt of running in a straight line turned into complete nose dives in the sand. The cooks cooked us a wonderful dinner of hot dogs, beans and pickles. Luckily, we tried the spinning man before eating. Otherwise, we're not quite sure what would have turned out. We can't wait to see Colorado tomorrow!

Note from Counselors Grant and Bob: The vans took some toll on wildlife today. Sadly, both Miss America and Carolina Panthers hit two pigeons and a blue jay on the long drive to South Dakota. If you don't believe us, look on US-14. Along with this unfortunate occurrence, TWB experienced life with no air conditioning and a flat tire. We are blaming our bad luck on our suspicion of a stolen rock at the Petrified Forest. We made it through, though, and had a great day. The counselors made the greatest personal purchases of all time in Custer, South Dakota. Unfortunately, these gifts will not be revealed till the last day of the trip (we can't wait). After watching all of the groups practice their dances, we can't wait for the famous DANCE CONTEST tomorrow night!

Enjoying our day at Mount Rushmore.

Looking patriotic in front of our Four Fathers.

Looking good with our presidents.
